Expanding Wireless Broadband for Emergency Responders
How it Works
Extending the Network

The following movie shows how the coverage area changes as additional sectors are deployed either on stationary towers or mobile deployable platforms.  The first image shows the coverage provided by a single 3-sector, 5.8GHz WiMAX base station.  This base station has been deployed in the I-79 Tech Park Research Center tower in Fairmont, WV.  The red, orange and yellow colors indicate areas of sufficient signal to establish a WiMAX link.  The green, blue and gray colors indicate areas of intermittent or no connectivity.

The next image in the series shows the additional coverage area that can be achieved by adding a 3-sector base station on a neighboring tower. These two towers are approximately 3.5 miles apart. Notice that the coverage area is greatly expanded. In particular, the coverage in the valleys between the towers is enhanced allowing better access to the network along several of the major roads in the region.

The final image in the series shows how coverage can be extended using the mobile tower platforms. This simulation uses the 48-foot mobile tower and a single-sector, 5.8GHz WiMAX base station to focus extended coverage down the valley toward Shinnston.
